Electrical Muscle Stimulation
Electrical muscle stimulation is used as a rehabilitation treatment to support the recovery process. This treatment can help to treat pain as well as restore muscle strength. It sends electrical pulses to the targeted muscle group stimulating muscle contractions. These electrical pulses mimic brain signals and the natural way the body should respond.
How It Works
Dr. Mandarino and his team attach electrodes to the patient’s skin to stimulate muscle contractions. These muscle contractions caused by this stimulation helps retrain muscles to respond to natural signals from the body and build muscle strength.
Benefits of EMS
Electrical muscle stimulation has various benefits. Some of these benefits include:
-
Strengthens muscles
-
Reactivate muscle response
-
Increase muscle response
-
Treats pain
-
Prevent muscle atrophy
Pain Treatment
In the treatment of pain, electrical stimulation is delivered to targeted nerves. Using the electrodes, the electrical pulses are directed at specific areas of the nervous system to block the transmission of pain signals being sent toward the brain and spine. Additionally, this stimulation increases the body’s production of endorphins, which are natural pain relievers.
